Many of you know that Bernard Madoff was convicted on creating a $50 billion Ponzi scheme that left investors with no money. He schemed on taking their money. Money from new investors were paying the existing investors. He was exposed when the market went down because people demanding their money back. This is when he ran out of money to pay them back.
People are eligible to up to a $500,000 payment if they filed a claim by July 2, 2009. People were doing the mad dash to file the claim. There is a chance that people can get some of their money back from the convict. A trustee was appointed by the Federal court to return the assets to the rightful owners. A little over 15,000 claims were filed by the deadline. Officials estimated between $13 to $21 billion dollars were lost over a period of time. Still, that is a huge difference for me. We are talking billions not millions. Hey, it is only money.
