HOMELESS POPULATION INCREASES BY 9%

WE HAVE A PROBLEM HOUSTON I MEAN WASHINGTON DC

The Department of Housing and Urban Development(HUD) reported that the homeless population has increased by 9% from 10/1/2007 to 9/30/2008. HUD revealed that at least one-third of the almost 1.6 million people living in transitional housing or in a shelter in 2008 comprised families - the numbers are a marginal rise over the year-before figures. Specifically speaking for the sheltered homeless individuals, 64 percent are men; and 62 percent are minority-community members. While 40 percent of them are between 31 to 50 years old; 12 percent are veterans. We all know this is a growing problem in our local areas. I lived in New Your City for six years and I saw a homeless person every time on the subway. Yes, I always gave change when asked of a person. There were other times when I offered to buy them food. How are we going to solve the homeless problem in America?

THREE IDEAS TO SOLVE THE HOMELESS PROBLEM IN AMERICA

Here are three ideas to aid the homeless crisis in America:

  1. HOMELESS FAIR: I have spoken to many people who become frustrated on obtaining public assistance. There are several different nonprofit agencies to help the homeless. However, it can be a maze for them to complete on their own. So, one can rent a public room and invite all the different social service both government and nonprofit agencies to be at one place for the homeless people.
  2. HOTELS: It would be advantageous to house the homeless in a hotel fashion on a temporary basis. However, the current solution is to put homeless up at hotels on the public dime. That becomes expensive for the taxpayer. Buying hotels and housing the homeless under this plan will be more efficient on the taxpayer.
  3. TEACH A PERSON HOW TO FISH: Giving someone money during hard times only helps them on a temporary basis. Also, it makes them become dependents of the state. Then, the person is not motivated to work because of dependency. This is the wrong message to send out there. One must work in order to eat. Helping the homeless to become productive American citizens is the end goal in mind. This way they can provide for themselves.

Let me know your thoughts on helping the homeless. We need to conquer this problem as a nation.
